Crab Quill Press is a natural extension of Ian Boydens lifelong interests
in paper, stones, the printed image, and the calligraphic line. Over the
last decade, his pursuit of these interests has led him to many places.
He has traveled to China, Taiwan, and Japan to study the history and art
of Chinese calligraphy and seal carving as well as paper making and conservation.
He has curated exhibitions of calligraphy and allied arts, written and translated
articles concerning the history of calligraphy, and taught courses in the
history and practice of Chinese calligraphy and painting. He has studied
book making, and letterpress and intaglio printing.
Ian Boyden is also a practicing painter, calligrapher,
seal carver, printer, and producer of other objects associated with calligraphy
(ink stones, brush rests, water dispensers, scholars rocks, etc.).
His own seals and calligraphy have been exhibited in China, Taiwan, Korea,
and the United States. In 1998, he took a part-time position as director
of the Sheehan Gallery, Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington. He currently
lives with his wife and daughter in Walla Walla, Washington.
